Zovirax Cream contains an ointment containing acyclovir, an antiviral agent known as a synthetic nucleoside analogue with the active ingredient acyclovir. It is used to treat infections caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Zovirax Cream is used to treat infections caused by the herpes zoster virus (HSV) and the herpes simplex virus (HSV-2). It can also be used to treat cold sores. Zovirax Cream should not be used to treat genital herpes. Zovirax Cream can also be used to reduce the number of blisters that herpes simplex virus infections cause.
Follow all directions and precautions on your prescription label. Zovirax Cream should be used as directed by your doctor or by your doctor's prescription only when the symptoms of an infection are being treated. Zovirax Cream is for external use only.
Zovirax Cream may not be safe for use on the skin, eyes, mucous membranes, or in other body parts, including mouth, vagina, anus, or eyes. Zovirax Cream may cause burning, irritation, itching or burning in the mouth, lips, or vagina, which may cause discomfort or cause pain. In particular, it may cause a dry mouth. Zovirax Cream should not be used to treat herpes infections that are caused by a virus other than HSV, such as cold sores (herpes simplex). Zovirax Cream should not be used to treat genital herpes (varicella).
Some side effects of Zovirax Cream may occur in some people. These side effects may include: • headache • flushing (warmth, redness, or tingle) • stuffy or runny nose • skin rash • skin lesions • blisters• skin rashes • nausea or vomiting • stomach pain
If you experience any of the following side effects while using Zovirax Cream, stop using this medicine immediately and seek immediate medical attention: • any unusual vaginal irritation, sudden loss of vision, or changes in vision • vaginal bleeding that is not controlled • sudden pain in the chest, upper back, arms, neck, or around the eyes
Do NOT use Zovirax Cream if: • you are allergic to any ingredient in Zovirax Cream • you are pregnant or are breast-feeding • you are using any other medicines, including over-the-counter medicines • you are a woman who is pregnant or are breastfeeding • you are taking any other medicines including those listed in the patient information leaflet
You have been advised by your doctor to stop using Zovirax Cream and seek medical attention immediately if any of the following side effects occur while you are using Zovirax Cream: • burning, irritation, itching, or a change in the amount of pain in your mouth, lips, or vagina • dry mouth • trouble swallowing • changes in taste • trouble sleeping • nausea and vomiting • sweating • a sudden start of a painful rash
